
This unique programme is specifically designed to meet the needs of those already working, or intending to work, in the health and social care services in the public, private and voluntary sectors in both the UK and internationally. Its evidence base is drawn from the latest research and practice in health & social care leadership and management sector, combined with the practical application of new knowledge and skills to work-based situations. The course is based on the new health leadership and management competencies in the UK and all assessments are designed to have application in the workplace.
The main rationale for offering the Postgraduate Diploma in Health & Social Care Management at LSME is to prepare highly trained managers and health workers for the many new career pathways in healthcare. As professionals from a wide variety of medical, nursing, midwifery, and other health backgrounds are increasingly taking on higher-level, demanding roles and offering leadership to others, this Post Graduate Diploma is aimed at assisting these managers in rising to their new challenges.
Programme Objectives
The major objective of the programme is to expose the students to the field of management with a focus on the areas of Health & Social Care. In more detail, it would enable them to:
- Understand the various concepts of Management and their applications in the field of Health and Social Care and demonstrate managerial skills in a developmental way.
- Identify and apply specialist expertise relevant to the various sub-disciplines of Health and Social Care Management.
- Critically analyse management theories and assess the business situation, set attainable objectives, generate effective business policies and oversee their effective implementation.
- Understand how to carry out a business research project in a scientific manner by applying appropriate methodologies
Programme Structure
London School of Management Education (LSME) offers this structured course package that gives business and health graduates the opportunity to develop their analytical skills and personal effectiveness, to think globally and meet the needs of modern business and health related issues, while gaining a well recognised qualification.
The Postgraduate Diploma consists of eight (8) taught units which normally take 20 months and a research project which will last for 4 months. This qualification will allow upward progression to the MBA in Health & Social Care. To achieve the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Health & Social Care Management students will be required to successfully complete the following 8 core units.
Entry Requirements
Eligible candidates will be expected to satisfy one of the following requirements:
- A first degree in business related subjects from a recognised university or institution.
- Degree/Diploma in nursing from a recognised university or Institution
- HND plus managerial experience
- Students with a first degree, but not in a business domain, must have at least one year management experience.
- Candidates must have adequate proof of proficiency in English language
What will you study?
There will be an induction programme introducing you to the modules and the aims of the course, and giving guidance on the approach to study. The programme starts with a personal assessment, using a specialised LSME Diagnostic Assessment Checklist. This assesses personal leadership strengths and identifies areas for development in health and social care. The units are detailed below:

- Individual and Group Presentations
- Research Projects/ Case Studies

Moderation & Quality Process
In order to make the assessment as fair as possible, a system of moderation has been put in place. LSME undertakes stringent assessment activities and internal moderation, whilst the ABP undertakes an external moderation exercise periodically. The final results are then presented to the LSME Academic Board for formal approval.
